Visit to Maktab Polis DiRaja

Our Rotaracters were given a rare opportunity to tour the Maktab Polis DiRaja in Cheras on 21 October 2008 together with Criminology students from the college. The visit was organised by the Criminology Department of ATC.
As part of the visit, Mr. Lazarus Jansen also gave a lecture on the topic of "Terrorism". Apart from the tour and the lecture, we were also given the chance to speak the police officers and get an insight on a career in the police force.
Overall, the visit turned out to be an eye-opening experience to us.

Model United Nations a success

By Rtr Irene Kam (also faculty advisor for Witenagemot)

The Rotaract Club and Witenagemot of ATC successfully held the inaugural Model United Nations (MUN) on the 18th October, 2008. MUN is an authentic simulation of the United Nations. Every year across the globe, young people come together in conferences to share their passion for international affairs, the art of diplomacy, and the principles of the United Nations. For the duration of a MUN conference, every participant or 'delegate' represents a member state of the United Nations, delegates representing the same state together form a 'delegation'.

This year’s conference of the General Assembly saw delegations from United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, China, India and South Africa. While a delegate presented their country’s position papers on the topic of HIV / AIDS during the moderated caucus, delegates from the other countries had the opportunity to put forward points of information to the speaker with the permission of the chairperson. An unmoderated caucus was also called when the judges were deliberating, where delegates mingled and discussed freely amongst themselves. At the end, the delegates’ vote on the resolutions (drafted by delegates and voted on by the committee). Resolutions are the final results of the discussion, writing and negotiation, which forms the written suggestions for addressing a specific problem or issue addressing the issue. The final resolution will be sent to UNICEF Malaysia on the 1st December 2008, in conjunction with the World AIDS Day.

The event was a smashing success, attracting participants from all levels of the LLB. The delegates did an amazing job, taking on the novel format and structure of MUN like seasoned professionals. Here are the delegates, thank you for your participation and enthusiasm :

Brazil – Stephanie Boo and Vitwat Sat Ng
China – Tan Cheng Yee, Soo Li Ching and Hasina Bashar
India – Cheong Kong Fei, Low Hong Woei, Yeo Hang Mor
South Africa – Alwin Rajasurya, Caryna Koh and Kenneth Koh
United Kingdom – Dorothy Tan Sze Kuan, Chaow Goon Mun, Leu Chong Lieng
United States – Chee Kok Jing, Lee Yoong Shin and Ian Choong

Congratulations to the South Africa delegation, who won the Best Delegation award, and walked away with cash price of RM 300. Kenneth Koh, also from South Africa delegation, was named the Best Delegate, and won the cash price of RM 100 .

The Organizing Chairperson was the International Service Director of Rotaract Club, Rebecca Yuvonne. The esteemed panel of judges comprises Ms Mary George, Mr Kitson Foong and Mr Jason Lim. The conference was chaired and moderated by Kwong Chiew Ee, President of Rotaract Club. Good job Rotaract and Witans, may we be able to bring MUN to a higher level next year!

FIONA Zuzartee has fond memories of her stint at her school’s Interact Club, where she even served as the club’s community service director during her final year at SMK TTDI.
When asked which was the most memorable, she said: “It was during our International Understanding Night. It nearly turned out to be a flop, but we made the best out of the worst situation possible.

“But at the end of the day, everyone came together, had fun and raised funds for charity.”
Former Interactor: Zuzartee was the event ambassador at the Rotaract Club of Advance Tertiary College’s charter celebration and first installation charity banquet. The event also marked her first public appearance after her crowning.

The Miss Malaysia-Indian Global 2008 winner was speaking at the Rotaract Club of Advance Tertiary College’s (ATC) charter celebration and first installation charity banquet, which marked her first public appearance after her crowning.

“I was nervous about giving my speech. The preparations were done the night before, but I didn’t get to memorise the whole thing.

“Luckily, I was able to get the key points,” said Zuzartee, who was also the event’s ambassador.
Rotary International District 3300 district governor Dr Rajindar Singh welcomed the club into the Rotary family and hoped it would grow from strength to strength in years to come.
Event organising chairman Chris De Cruz said the committee had approached the people at Best Western Premier Seri Pacific Hotel KL with their idea of combining their installation night with a charity element.

“The hotel was keen on our idea and became the event partner. Part of the event’s proceeds will go to two homes - Rumah Chrestus and Rumah Nur Salam, which were adopted by our club and the hotel respectively.

“The children from each home received some duit raya and a goodie bag, courtesy of the hotel and various sponsors. Our college also sponsored some cash to each home,” said De Cruz.
“We adopted Rumah Chrestus, a foster home in Cheras, as our community service project.

“Our members visit the children on a regular basis and give them tuition, take them out for McDonald’s, clean up the home - basically spend time with them,” he said.

Model United Nations

The Rotaract Club of ATC, in collaboration with Witenagemot (The Orators' Club of ATC) will be hosting a Model United Nations (MUN) on 18th October 2008.

MUN is an academic simulation where participants take on the role as ambassadors for the country they are to represent, debating, preparing solutions and negotiating with other "countries" to find the most acceptable solution. Participants are required to do research of the country they are representing, taking note of what the country's stand is, responses from international community, and any steps that can be taken to improve a particular situation.

The issue to be discussed in this session of MUN will be "Combating HIV/AIDS". It is hope that through this forum, the participating "countries", United States, United Kingdom, South Africa, Brazil, China and India will be able to seek a common ground on ways to combat this epidemic, which will lead to the reduction of child mortality, one of the U.N Millennium Development Goals, and also the focus of this year's Rotary Theme, Make Dreams Real. The consensus reached during this forum will be included in a Final Resolution that will be sent to United Nations.

The purpose of this MUN is to create awareness among Rotaracters and students of ATC on the issues on HIV/AIDS that have been plaguing the global community.

This forum is open to general public. For further enquiries, please contact International Service Director and Project Chairman, Rtr. Rebecca Yuvonne at rebecca_2020@hotmail.com
